Just got back to New York after a nice trip to Boston. Nice city. Good to see some of the family.

While walking to work today, I was treated with the massive organization required to do an install for Richard Serra, so I thought I’d share a few pics I snapped from the iPhone: IMG_0126IMG_0128

Pretty freakin’ huge.

I’m in Boston for a few days with my Dad and Linda visiting my grandparents. Going to try and visit the MIT Media Lab later today, and then Harvard square.

In other news, the ITP 30th Anniversary was great. Clay Shirky gave a stellar talk about the structure of the ITP community on Saturday morning, followed by a bunch of interesting ‘pecha-kucha’ five minute talks by various alums. The Saturday night gala was very nice – I’ve never seen so many well-dressed geeks in one place before. The speeches honoring Red Burns were very touching. Dan Shiffman and Matt Parker deserve a lot of credit for making such amazing use of IAC’s gigantic video screen, with several great visualizations including a great timeline of ITP’s 30 years. All in all, very nicely done.

The future of digital archiving is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Myself, along with technical directors Emma Lloyd from Eyebeam, Doron Ben-Avraham from the New Museum, and Nick Hasty from Rhizome have been starting a kind of research group focused on the unique problems archivists face as digital media grows older and needs to be preserved.

We’ve been discussing theoretical and technical challenges, such as saving the code versus saving representational instances (such as pictures or screen casts) – in the face of rapid software obsolescence. I believe this will move forward into some kind of public facing event or panel discussion within the next few months. So stay tuned.

Hi, and welcome to the new 610-design site. I got really sick of the old one, so I switched it up a bit. Props to fellow Eyebeamers Steve Lambert, Jeff Crouse, and Co. for the wpfolio theme. Click on the different categories to check out my projects in those areas. Enjoy.

Random note for the day: 8 years ago today, I was flying from New York to London to start a year of study abroad at the University of Sheffield in northern England. Didn’t hear about 9/11 until I landed in Scotland for my orientation. I was flying United too I think.

Wow, crazy electrical storm tonight over Brooklyn. I had a great view from living room, so I just turned off the lights and watched for a while. I think one lightning bolt hit about a block away; it shook the building and was so awesomely loud. No wonder everyone thought Zeus had a bad temper.

In other news, I’m doing a friend’s site using the blueprint css framework – on the suggestion of a few friends. First time trying it, so I’ll keep up to date on my progress.
